Since then, the Nepal Cricket Team has made rapid strides in the development and promotion of cricket, with the help of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the National Sports Council, and the Asian Cricket Council. Nepal has established regional and district tournaments, school and college competitions, and national leagues to nurture and showcase the talent of its players. Nepal has also built several cricket grounds and facilities across the country, with the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur being the main venue for international matches.

Nepal’s cricket team has participated in various ICC events, such as the ICC Trophy, the World Cricket League, the Intercontinental Cup, the World Cup Qualifier, and the T20 World Cup Qualifier. Nepal has also played bilateral and multilateral series with other associate and full members of the ICC, such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, UAE, Oman, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

Nepal’s biggest achievement in cricket came in 2014, when they qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time, after finishing third in the T20 World Cup Qualifier in UAE. Nepal impressed everyone with their spirited performance in the tournament, held in Bangladesh, where they beat Hong Kong and Afghanistan, and gave a tough fight to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, before bowing out in the first round.

Nepal’s most recent feat was in 2023, when they qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the second time, after finishing second in the T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier Final in Nepal. Nepal beat UAE and Malaysia in the semi-finals and final respectively, and only lost to Oman in a super over in the group stage. Nepal will now play in the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2024, where they will face the likes of India, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan in the first round.

Nepal’s cricket team is led by the young and dynamic captain Rohit Paudel, who is also the world’s youngest half-centurion in international cricket. Nepal’s batting is bolstered by the likes of Aasif Sheikh, Dipendra Singh Airee, Kushal Bhurtel, and Kushal Malla, who can score runs at a brisk pace and hit big shots. Nepal’s bowling is spearheaded by the spin wizard Sandeep Lamichhane, who is also the first Nepali player to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Big Bash League (BBL), and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Nepal’s bowling attack also includes the pace duo of Karan KC and Sompal Kami, and the spin trio of Lalit Rajbanshi, Mousom Dhakal, and Pratis GC.

Nepal’s cricket team is coached by the experienced and respected Monty Desai, who has previously worked with the Rajasthan Royals, the Afghanistan national team, and the Canada national team. Nepal’s cricket team is also supported by a passionate and loyal fan base, who cheer and chant for their heroes in every match, both at home and abroad.
