7 Celebrities Who Contributed To Earthquake Relief

There are so many celebrities around us that we may not even be able to name them all! We know them as Heroes and Heroines. But only few of them have managed to be a Hero in real life!

After the devastating earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, these heroes stood up and helped the community. We may have missed few but here are our top 7 celebrities who helped the earthquake victims.

1. Rajesh Hamal

The actor was in Europe when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. After finding out about it, he immediately started collecting funds from Non-Resident Nepalis living in France, the Netherlands and Finland.

In Netherlands, he was featured by a citizen-run organization, Giro 555, and with help from Dutch Nepali community, they were able to collect about 9.6 million euro in a single day!

2.  Rekha Thapa

Rekha Thapa spent three days in Arya Ghat helping out in cremation. She even paid for the burial of unclaimed bodies. Rekha and Himgyap distributed masks to the people to keep themselves safe in the event some epidemics. She also donated Rs. 500, 000 money from her upcoming release, to help build homes for technicians, and few media workers whose houses in Sindhupalchowk and Nuwakot were destroyed.

3. Dhurmus and Suntali (Sitaram Kattel and Kunjana Ghimire- comedians)

The husband & wife were in USA for cultural shows during the earthquake. After hearing the news, they flew back to Nepal on May 2. They build 40 Dhurmus-Suntali Integrated Settlements in Panchkhal, Kavre Palanchowk. This was a collaboration with their popular show Meri Bassai, Bhadragol and social network sagoon.com.

Sitaram spent 70 days constructing the new settlements with help of others! The duo is also the Sanitation Brand Ambassador of Nepal government. They built 10 toilets for 40 quake affected households in Sindhupalchowk and also constructed seven class-rooms of a primary school in Nuwakot. The money came from various fundraisers organised in the United States, prior to the quake.

4. Manisha Koirala

Once news of the quake struck, Manisha Koirala left the shoot of her upcoming movie in India and came back home. The government nominated her goodwill ambassador to raise funds for relief and reconstruction aftermath of the quake.

Koirala said “I am truly happy to renew my partnership with UNFPA in my homeland at this crucial time,”. She added that the UNFPA’s life-saving interventions are needed more than ever.

5. Maha Jodi

The Maha Jodi distributed relief supplies like blankets, tarpaulin sheets, and food to the victims in Balthali VDC & also donated $2,000 to Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre in Sankhu which they received from Nepalis living in Washington DC.

The duo was also appointed as goodwill ambassador to raise funds for relief and reconstruction of Nepal government aftermath of the quake. They tied up with various organisations, NGOs and INGOs for reconstruction work in various affected areas of the country.

6. Adrian Pradhan

Adrian Pradhan, the former lead vocalist of the rock band 1974 A D, shared the same stage with renowned artists of India like Farhan Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani, Shilpa Rao, Indian Ocean along with Kalimpong-based singer Bipul Chettri in a concert sponsored by Hindustan Times to raise fund for quake victims back in Nepal. He also performed in Seoul in South Korea, Kalimpong and Darjeeling.

7. Komal Oli

Komal Oli, senior news chief and a popular radio jockey at the station, spent three days in the studio airing live updates from throughout the country. She also counseled children from age six to 16 in various schools.
