Mother’s Day, Ama ko mukh herne din, is a special day, especially for all the mothers. Mothers who are always there for you no matter what, the one who thinks of you every single time and put your priorities first neglecting theirs.
To respect and express love mother, people in Nepal celebrate Mother’s day on the new moon day of Baisakh, the first month in Nepali calendar. It is also called Mata Tirtha Aunsi. People show their love and appreciation to their mother by spending time with her, cooking for her and buying her gifts.
And for those who have lost their mother, they go to the Mata Tirtha, sacred pilgrimage bathing that lies six miles southwest of Central Kathmandu. It consists of two pools, the larger one is for bathing and on the smaller one, they look upon the pool to see their mother’s face.
But there is a story behind going to Mata Tirtha on new moon day (Aunsi) of Baisakh. According to the legends, thousands of years ago (in Dwapar Yug) a shepherd boy in Nepal lost his mother and was so depressed. He went Mata Tirtha pond and suddenly he saw his mother’s face in the water. From that day on, this day was known as Mata Tirtha Aunsi, the Nepali Mother’s day. People believe that coming to this place and worshiping on this day brings peace to the departed soul of their mother.
Although it was a tale and nobody sees an actual image in their mothers in the pond, thousands of people go to the place and pay respect to their mothers.
Wishing you all the mothers HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY.
