Public Smoking Banned in Kathmandu

Tobacco Control and Regulatory Act-2010 which was re-enforced on August 2011, ban on smoking in public places is once again implemented in 2016 inside the valley and several others areas of Nepal. People who smoke in public places are being fined up to Rs. 100 and civil servants are said to be liable to the administrative action.

The public areas include public transport, government offices, educational institutions, airports, workplaces at industries and factories, cinema halls or theaters, hotels, motels, restaurants, bars, hostels, guest houses, department stores, mini markets, religious places and bus stops. There are several other places where you are not allowed to smoke.

The government did propose this law in 2011 but it was only implemented after 5 years ( 2016 ) and now it’s being more effective around the country. Recently police personnel have caught more than 500 people in the last 2 days and have charged Rs. 100 per each person. Looks like this re-enforcement is working quite well but lets hope this won’t be just a show off at the beginning.
