Sajha Bus Introduces Smart Cards

For the first time in Nepal, Sajha Bus has inaugurated a smart-card, an electronic pre-paid card, targeting their passengers. Passengers travelling by Sajha Bus can now pay through smart-card and wouldn’t be in need to carry any money.

The smart card service has been launched on trial basis for now on the buses operating on Lagankhel-Narayan Gopal Chowk route. Sajha Yatayat plans to introduce the electronic pre-paid card system on all 16 buses after a month.

The card, which was made public on Monday amid a programme, costs Rs 200 with a balance of Rs 50. One can top up the balance as required – just the way one tops up balance on mobile phones and will not be needing to renew it in the future.

According to Mahendra Raj Pandeya, acting manager at Sajha Yatayat, the smart card will make it easy for passengers, as they do not have to pay cash every time they use the Sajha buses. The electronic card will also help in maintaining transparency.

The back door must be used as the entrance door where one can find a device to show their card and the front door must be used as an exit door. While exiting, the passengers must show their card again to another device beside the door which will then calculate fare according to the distance they’ve traveled.

In case of loss, passengers must pay Rs 200 again to get a new one.
