Tsho Rolpa is a huge, potentially lethal glacial lake in Nepal that has been the focus of intense study and surveillance for decades. The Government of Nepal also putting it on its 1997 priority list. Mitigation efforts have effectively raised the elevation of the lake by 3 m by the year 2000, but the possibility of an eruption is still lingering.

In the past 60 years, the lake has been slowly expanding and now covers an area of 1.6 km, which amounts approximately to about 148 football fields. Studies also recorded a rise of 3.3 per cent in the lake region between 2010 and 2015. An outburst flood will be devastating for people living downstream.

Moreover in 2012, the UNDP reported that an early warning system installed by the authorities in the late 1990s, which became defunct through lack of maintenance, will be replaced by a more modern warning system for glacial floods from the lake.

Mountains that can be seen along this road include, among others, Gauri Shankar (7,145 m) and Menlungtse (7,181 m). The path goes through the villages of Brahmin, Chhetri, Tamang and Sherpa and past Bigu Gompa, home to over 300 nuns. This region is primarily Buddhist, as can be seen by mani stones fluttering in the breeze along with the path and prayer flags.

Routes And Roads

The Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek starts from Dolakha, an 8-hour drive from Kathmandu, near Charikot. Through much of the trek, the path runs along the Tama Koshi River and also crosses the Rolwaling River in the upper regions. Walking through the small settlements of the Rolwaling Valley, you will have a stunning view of Gaurishankar Himal (7134 m) during the trek.

Tsho Rolpa Lake, the pinnacle of this trek, is situated between tiny hills and nearby mountains that make the view look spectacular. The tranquil scenery around the lake always makes it worth the trek. Since the path takes you to the border side of Tibet, there’s a big influence of Buddhism in the region as well.
