In UN headquarters elections in New York, Nepal was reelected to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). Nepal has been re-elected with 150 votes since January 2018 and will complete a straight three-year mandate of 2021-2023.
In addition to Nepal, the 75th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations and three countries from Asia Pacific region – China, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan. This is the second time that Nepal became a member of the UNHRC.

Nepal will continue to contributes to the Council in its attempts to foster an apolitical and objective human rights policy, with a singular approach to the socio-economic development for a least-developed region. Nepal is now committed to uphold the values of justice, unity, and progress for all, with a high degree of accountability, and to place human rights throughout country.
Amrit Bahadur Rai, Nepal’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said
Nepal’s re-election is the international community’s acknowledgment of the country’s progressive journey on political and human rights fronts.It is also a recognition of Nepal’s efforts in protection and promotion of human rights both at home and across the globe, including through our peacekeepers,” said Rai. “Nepal would continue to contribute to the work of the Council in promoting an apolitical and impartial approach to human rights through a unique perspective of a land-locked and least developed country striving for socio-economic transformation.
Nepal serving as a member of the council since January 2018, has been reelected with 150 votes to serve another three-year term of 2021-2023, the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations said issuing a statement on Tuesday.
