Nepal's Jagadishpur Reservoir Destination for Bird Watchers

Jagadishpur Reservoir is the largest artificial lake of Nepal which is situated in Kapilvastu district. It is a wetland and included in Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance in 2003. The Department of Irrigation manages overall Reservoir and the river source of Jagadishpur Reservoir is Banganga River.

In early 1970, it was constructed for irrigation purpose fed by a canal from the nearby Banganga River, which drains from the Chure Hills. It is considered as a buffer zone for bird movement due to it’s silt and nutrients topography. Jagadishpur humidity also provides birds with a better climate and habitat.

This is a wide lake and the birds can fly and play freely in the waters, and it is the location that has become a magnet for bird watchers and photographers of animals from all over the world. The reservoir and its surrounds are believed to provide importantly habitat for resident, wintering and passage migrant wetland birds.

Studies shows that the total of 37 wetland- dependent bird species was found in four visits and five globally threatened species have been recorded in Jagadishpur Reservoir. It favor the growth of reed beds, which provide shelter for several endangered species. Reservoir is also surrounded by terai cultivated land which makes it habitable for large numbers of Flora and fauna.

Endangered Birds Species In Jagadishpur Reservoir

A total of 22,491 water birds were counted in Jagadishpur and there are 167 species of birds including eight species of amphibians, and 38 species of reptiles. However, Surveys shows that due to birds hunting and unsustainable methods of harvesting fish and natural resources are degrading the environment of it’s surroundings.

Nevertheless, Siltation, deposition of detritus from aquatic macrophytes, water pollution from agricultural chemicals are also hampering the habitants of it’s surrounding. Moreover, frequent invasion of unknown species in Jagadishpur Reservoir’s geography also causing the harsh environment for Reservoir’s endangered species.
