Australian Dream Among Nepalese Youth

You must have heard the Phrase “American Dream” which generally is a belief that anyone regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone.

This is the reason the USA stand itself at the top destination for international student followed by UK and Australia. These countries receive almost 40% of the total international student throughout the world.  However, in the context of Nepalese youth, the Australian dream seems to be alluring than the American Dream as Australia has been the top destination for Nepalese students for abroad study followed by Japan, India, and USA in fourth.

Immigration Scenario In Australia

As per Nepal Education, Science and Technology Ministry (MOEST) in FY 2017/18 around 93, 808 students aspiring to pursue an educational career abroad received “No Objection Certificate” out of which 51, 334 were for Australian Institutes for further studies.

According to recent data published on International Consultants for Education and Fairs (ICEF), Five Countries comprise more than half of the total international student in Australia: 
⦁ China – 28% 
⦁ India – 15% 
⦁ Nepal – 7% 
⦁ Brazil – 4% 
⦁ Vietnam – 3.5 % 

Australia has been one of the top choices for international students for further studies in abroad as it stands in 3rd position currently with the Market value of 5 Billion AUD i.e. 3.47 Billion USD. There has been a significant growth in international students in Australia since past 3 years with the growth rate in a double digit for example 12.67 % growth in 2017 and 11.4% in 2018 and 11% in 2019.

Reason Behind the growth Of International Student In Australia

Being the rising growing economy hub, Australia has so much to offer for their international students. Due to the world’s quality of education and best living standard, Australia’s land is welcoming immigrants in huge number and we have accumulated the relevant reasons for it’s growth.

Quality education

Australian Education Institutes offers quality education as 7 of its universities are listed in top 100 universities globally whereas 10 of its university comes under the top 200 around the world. It offers more of a researched based education rather than continuing the traditional method of studying.

Safe living environment

Australia is generally very safe and welcoming in case of living and studying as it has been considered one of the safe country throughout the world. Similarly Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide are among the top 10 countries with the highest livability index around world. Melbourne ranking second which was on Top for seven consecutive years followed by Sydney in 3rd and Adelaide raking 10th as per the global livability index 2019.

However we cannot ignore the policies by Australian government for international student which includes Post study work (PSW), Tuition protection Service (TPS), Education Service for Overseas Students (ESOS Act).

Post Study WorkThis visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. It lets you live,work, and& study & in Australia, temporarily. This is between 2 – 4 years, depending on your qualification.

Tuition Protection Service

The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is an initiative of the Australian Government to assist international students whose education providers are unable to fully deliver their course of study. The TPS ensures that these students are able to either:
⦁ complete their studies in another course or with another education provider or
⦁ receive a refund of their unspent tuition fees


Education Service for Overseas Students Act

The Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework protects the rights of international students studying in Australia, including:
⦁ Your right to receive, before enrolling, current and accurate information about the courses, fees, modes of study, and other information from your institution and your institution’s agent
⦁ Your right to sign a written agreement with your institution before paying fees, setting out the services to be provided, fees payable, and information about refunds of course money. Make sure to keep a copy of your written agreement.
Generally, The processing are break down into 3 phases
⦁ Offer letter

This is the first step in the process to study in Australia where you send you Academic documents and Passport copies along with you English language credentials i.e. IELTS, TOFEL, PTE and Marriage certificate in case you are married. After the submission of the documents you may receive a full offer if all the requirements are fulfilled or you may receive a conditional offer with the conditions you need to fulfill to turn it into a full offer.

Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)

After receiving the offer you need to Present all of your documents including Each pages of your passport, Bank documents ( Education loan or cash), Financial documents ( Annual Income, Property Valuation, Tax clearance), relationship certificates and copies of the citizenships of all members shown in relationship unless they are minor, Work experience if any and Incase of married student additional documents like spouse citizenship, Passport, educational documents and employment documents if any are required.

Meanwhile, these are to be notarized by a lawyer for its authenticity. After the GTE is approved you need to pay the tuition fees of a whole year or half a year depending upon your education institute if everything goes well you will then receive confirmation of enrollment (COE).

Visa Lodgment

After receiving the COE you are all set for online visa lodgment during which you need to do some Medical Examination and Biometric collection. Which are done generally by Norvic Hospital and VFS Global Nepal respectively. After the visa lodgment, the decision may come within 2 – 4 working weeks or sooner. And remember Australia offers a paper visa which you need to have as you will not get the visa on your passport like China, USA.

As per the ICEF China Alone Contribute 28% of the total international student in Australia However, china has flagged a possible boycott of Australian Universities as Bilateral Tension rise over Australia’s call for Independent inquiry into the Origins of the coronavirus. The boycott of Australian universities may result in rise in Number of international students from other countries like Nepal and India. This may open a door of opportunities for Nepalese Student who wants to make his or her career through Higher Education Abroad.
