NEPAL’S RAILWAY

Railway transportation is one of the transportations in Nepal which is not well developed.

The railway service is very limited in our country due to the topographical structure. Railways are used mostly in Terai region due to the plain area. It consists of one engine and 8 to 9 boxes which consist approximately 30 seats in each. Most of the rails of Nepal are red in colour.

The railway service began in Nepal in 1927, connecting Raxaul to Amlekhgunj which was 47km in length. At the time, it was named Nepal Government Railway (NGR). It was made blue in colour and was so slow that it took one and half an hour to complete its route. It was closed subsequent to the construction of the modern highway in 1965.

In 1992 AD, a well-developed and managed railway track, Jayanagar to Janakpur Railways, was constructed of length 53 KM. There were two engines for railways services; engine number 535 for Janakpur- Jayanagar and engine number 545 for the route from Jayanagar- Janakpur. It was the first ever railways to go from one country to another.

As time passed, a lot of incidents took place there. One of the most dangerous incidents was when the train ran off without a driver or passenger on it from Jayanagar, but it had stopped soon as it was out of gas. No harm was done there.

A number of incidents had happened to the railways. In rainy seasons, this service is really disturbed. Once, when the engine no. 535 was coming to Janakpur, the fuel was finished in midway; the pump of oil tank was damaged. I once on that train. We were coming to Jayanagar, and the route was for 2 hours.  Lack of fuel in the train was only one reason because of which we reached at home after 10 hours. Because of this incident, the Nepal government is making a plan to construct new railways.

The new construction of Railways has been started. Most of the budget of the project on railways is also given by India. Government is planning to build railways to connect both eastern and western parts of Nepal.  As they are making train much similar to that of India has, most probably re-construction of the track will be of Janakpur- Jayanagar track. Not only that, these new train will start to work and provide us with services within three months as far as possible.
